      COMMUNIQUE: 206
      DATE: 03-11-98

SUBJECT: Version 2.14- Apex II Operating System

Compsee just keeps finding ways to make the Apex II better. How would you like an additional 126K of non-volatile data storage at no additional cost? How about a new memory test or how about a true foreign character set capability? Well, we have now done all that, and more!

      FLASH ENHANCEMENT

The Apex II with 512K Flash* has 126k of unused Flash memory that can be conveniently used for non-volatile file storage. Data from a RAM file can easily be stored in this area.

To enable this useful new feature simply download for free from Compsee's web site version 2.14 of the Apex II Operating System. Then load the new operating system into your Apex II.

Instructions are included in with the Operating System Upgrade for specifics on syntax and technical instruction on how to access this area of memory.

      * 128 K Flash configurations do not have this unused memory available for file storage however, units can be factory upgraded from 128 K Flash configuration to 512K. Call Compsee Customer Service at 1-800-628-3888 for upgrade pricing

      MEMORY TEST

Another useful feature that has been incorporated into version 2.14 Operating System for Apex II is the new Memory Test.

By depressing the ALT-M keys from the immediate mode, the Apex II will perform a test of all available RAM memory.

      FOREIGN CHARACTER SETS

A third new feature enabled by version 2.14 Apex II Operating System is Apex II Foreign Character Sets. Other portable data collection terminal manufacturers have offered what they call "foreign characters sets". These offerings typically consist of some type of multiple key depression sequences that produces one of the extended ASCII characters.

Upon close evaluation you will notice that these manufactures do not address a true foreign character set. Only a subset of the extended ASCII character codes is addressable, thereby leaving out some of the required foreign characters.

The Apex II foreign character set produces not only extended ASCII characters but true foreign characters for Danish, Portuguese, German and Spanish. You will not see these characters available in other portable data collectors.

A simple BASIC demo program for the Apex II is available on the Compsee web site that creates a LCD screen to display each character set by country. This file can be downloaded for free from the Compsee Web Site.
