Duet Dual Action Scanner
Operational Overview

The scanner has three operational states:

  • Fixed Mode (with Portable option)
  • Targeted Handheld Mode
  • Sleep Mode

The section titled How to Scan, describes how to use the scanner in each mode.

Fixed Mode (with Portable Option)

In the Fixed Mode, the scanner remains in the stand and reads when a barcode is swept or presented to the scan window (fixed). You can also remove the scanner from the stand and present and sweep the scanner over the barcode label using the front scan window (portable option). The Targeted Handheld Mode is disabled while in the Fixed Mode.

Targeted Handheld Mode

Remove the scanner from the stand to use it in the Targeted Handheld Mode. Pressing the button switch enables targeted scanning. The Targeted Handheld Mode allows the scanner to read barcodes selectively. A Pointer Line provides a visual aide for aiming the single scan line at the barcode.

This mode is particularly useful for reading a single barcode where multiple barcodes exist in the same area. The Fixed Mode is disabled while the button switch is pressed.

Sleep Mode

Sleep Mode describes the scanner's condition after the scanner has been idle (no barcodes are scanned) for a preset time.

General

When the scanner is idle, and a preset time expires, the laser turns off while the motor continues to run. If more idle time elapses, the preset time for the motor also expires, and the motor turns off. Turning the laser and the motor off when the scanner is idle saves power, and extends laser and motor life.

Wake up Methods

The scanner "wakes up" by two methods: (1) momentarily pressing the button switch; or (2) the scanner responding to an ambient light change, caused by waving an object (such as the operator's hand) in front of the scanner.

How To Scan

With two scan windows, the Duet scanner can easily adapt to either fixed (portable) or targeted handheld scanning applications. The front scan window is for most retail items .

The rear scan window emits a targeted scan for handheld scanning of hard to read or bulky items, or to read an individual barcode label among many labels.

Fixed Mode Scanning (Front Window)

Fixed Mode scanning provides ease of use by reducing the need to pick up the scanner to read a barcode. Its specially designed scan pattern minimizes the need for the operator to adjust the item for scanning. The scanner stand adjusts (+ / - 20 degrees) to an optimal and comfortable position for increased efficiency.

To use the scanner in Fixed Mode, place the scanner into the stand. Make sure it is seated securely in the stand. In the Fixed Mode, the scanner can read barcodes either in the sweep or presentation mode to accommodate different user styles.

Sweep Scanning

To perform a sweep scan, move (sweep) the product, with the barcode label facing the front window, laterally through the scan volume.

The optimal scanning distance is at the center of the scan volume, or approximately 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) from the window.

Presentation Scanning

To obtain optimum s canning performance, face the barcode label towards the center of the front scanner window. Move (present) the product with the barcode label towards the scanner.

Portable Scanning Option

The Duet scanner is also portable. To use as a portable scanner, remove the scanner from the stand but do not press the button switch. Present (or sweep) the scanner to the barcode label using the front scan window.

Targeted Handheld Scanning

Targeted handheld scanning allows the operator to point the scanner instead of lifting heavy or bulky items that are in the customer's hands or shopping cart. A specially designed Pointer Line helps the operator visually aim at the desired barcode label.

The scanner's shape cradles comfortably in the operator's hand. Its weight is distributed evenly to maximize balance and minimize fatigue. To use the Duet scanner as a targeted handheld scanner:

1. Grasp the scanner with the palm of the hand with the thumb positioned on or near the button switch. The index finger should lay across the top rear of the scanner near the rear scan window.

2. Lift the scanner from the stand and position the scanner over the product to scan.

3. Use the Pointer Line to help locate the center of the barcode before scanning

4. Use your thumb to press the button switch to scan the barcode. Release the button switch when you hear the "good read" tone. To continue scanning in the Targeted Handheld Mode, repeat the process above: (3), placing the Pointer Line on the next item barcode label, and (4), pressing the button switch.

Routine Maintenance

The rugged industrial design requires little maintenance. Maintenance consists of simply cleaning the scanner windows periodically.

Cleaning Front and Rear Scan Windows

Regular cleaning of glass surfaces of the scanner reduces residue buildup and helps ensure the systems highest performance.

DO NOT USE ALCOHOL, PETROLEUM, ACETONE, ABRASIVE CLEANING OR ABRASIVE PADS. THEY WILL HARM OR SCRATCH THE SURFACE.

Use these procedures for cleaning the scanner's front and rear scan windows.

NOTE

The scanner window is high quality, scratch resistant, glass. Use a soft lens cloth and nonabrasive cleaner to avoid scratching.

1. Spray the cleaner on a soft, lint-free cloth and clean the glass surfaces.

2. Completely wipe glass surfaces dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
