PowerScan
Product Overview
Product Positioning Statement
For commercial and industrial customers, who have to read
poorly printed bar codes under tough environmental conditions,
the PowerScan is the premier industrial handheld scanner
that sets the standard for ruggedness and scanning performance
in one product. Unlike the Symbol LS3200 and LS3600, the
PowerScan was designed exclusively for the industrial market
place and its demanding environment.

General Description
Designed from the Ground Up for Industrial Use
PowerScan is a family of premier industrial handheld scanners,
designed from the ground up to be the most rugged and reliable
handheld scanners available. There are four primary models planned
based on different reading capabilities; a standard range reader,
a high density reader, a long range reader and an auto-range reader.
The PowerScan brand name, which will become synonymous with ruggedness
and quality, is prominently displayed on the sides of every PowerScan
handheld scanner. The different models will be signified by two
letters following the PowerScan name; e.g. PowerScanTM LR for
the long range model and PowerScanTM HD for the high density model.
The standard range model will only display the PowerScan logo,
without a two letter designator. All models will also be available
in both tethered and cordless versions.
PowerScan is ideally suited for demanding and tough industrial
applications, like inventory control, parcel sorting and tracking,
product manufacturing - from electronics goods to large industrial
equipment, outdoor applications like rental car returns and even
freezer or cold storage applications. PowerScan is able to succeed
where other scanners have failed because it was designed with
these tough environments in mind, and as a result supports many
unique features that are not found in competitive products.
Every PowerScan scanner is sealed from driving rain and wind-blown
dust, allowing it the highest sealing rating in the industry,
IEC IP-55. This assures important internal components remain clean
and dry even in extremely harsh conditions. The protective enclosure
system is molded using one of the most durable polymer materials
available, designed specifically to withstand high temperatures,
harsh chemicals and repeated impacts. The internal components
of the scanner are further protected by a rubber-like material,
which is permanently molded to the enclosure system at every point
of impact, providing shock dampening both internally and externally.
This enables a PowerScan scanner to pass the most stringent drop
test in the industry. Combine this with a shatter-proof window,
which is diamond coated for scratch resistance, and you have the
most rugged scanner in the industry... PowerScan!
PSC sets a New Standard of Performance with QuadraLogicTM
With PowerScan you can rely on fast, accurate bar code reading.
It is designed to read a wide range of symbol densities and autodiscriminate
all standard symbologies. PowerScan also sets a new standard for
poor label reading performance using PSC's new
QuadraLogicTM decoding software. In the industrial environment
we know that bar code labels are often less than perfect. Bar
codes which are printed using a dot matrix printer, or lightly
printed, or which have been smudged and scuffed up are not uncommon,
yet are challenging to read, if not impossible, for most handheld
bar code scanners. QuadraLogic decoding software was developed
specifically to meet these challenges. QuadraLogic employs a four-level
decoding scheme, which progressively invokes one of four decoding
algorithms based on the quality of the bar code label. The best
quality labels automatically use the simplest decoding algorithms,
and the poorest quality labels use the most stringent decoding
algorithms. And best of all, QuadraLogic software comes standard
on every model of PowerScan.
A New Motorless Scan Mechanism mean High Reliability
The scan module used in PowerScan is also new from PSC. It is
based on a motor-less scan mechanism which uses a metal flexure
to assure snappy scanning performance. This new mechanism is so
reliable that PSC warrants it for the life of the scanner. The
scan module also uses an extra-bright visible laser diode so that
the user can easily see the scan line, even in high ambient light
conditions. A dedicated micro-controller allows the user to easily
configure many useful features, like a marker beam for distant
reading, and a narrower scan angle for reading labels that are
close together.
New Modular Interface Strategy support AutoSelectTM cables
PowerScan has excellent connectivity and supports a wide range
of communications options with its unique multi-interface module
system. Each interface module has up to three different interface
options. The desired interface is selected using one of PSC's
AutoSelect cables. This system allows the user to move from a
portable application to a fixed host by simply unplugging and
replugging in the scanner. Best of all, the interface cables used
with PowerScan are the same ones used on PSC's QuickScan 6000
Plus. The small interface module is sealed in the handle of the
scanner, and is designed to be user replaceable by simply removing
the end cap on the handle. This system also allows for custom
interface designs by value added resellers.
