EAS Deactivation
Support for Checkpoint Systems EAS
Deactivation
Introduction to Questions & Answers
PSC now supports Checkpoint EAS deactivation on the Magellan
SL , VS1200, VS1000, and HS1250 products.
Each of these products is available from the factory with the
EAS deactivation antenna installed. This bulletin answers commonly
asked questions about EAS support by our products.
What is included in the EAS option?
EAS option includes a deactivation antenna PCB and a cable which
connects to a Checkpoint Systems deactivation chassis. With Magellan
SL, the EAS option also includes a special EAS long-life top.
This top is a modified version of the standard LLT. The top actually
functions as the EAS antenna.
Why order the factory option?
Why not let Checkpoint
upgrade scanners in the field?
The factory option is a more convenient solution for the customer.
There is no need to take apart the scanner in the field to install
the antenna. The scanner is EAS-ready, right out of the box. Just
connect to the Checkpoint deactivation chassis and go. In addition,
the factory option is documented in the Level 1 Service Manuals
for the products, and is supported by factory replacement parts.
What does the factory EAS option cost?
US List price is $150 for the VS1200, VS1000,
and HS1250.
Can my regular installer or service provider connect the scanner
with EAS option to the Checkpoint deactivation chassis?
No. Checkpoint Systems must make the connection as part of their
installation process for the store.
Does the factory installed antenna work with the EAS systems
of other vendors?
At this time, the only EAS vendor for which our factory-installed
antennas have been qualified is Checkpoint Systems.
My customer has selected Sensormatic as its EAS supplier?
Does
PSC have an integrated deactivation solution for Sensormatic?
No, we do not. Sensormatic uses magnetic technology, which does
not integrate easily into bar code scanners. However, Sensormatic
does offer deactivation pads, which can be mounted adjacent to
or in front of our scanners.
Is it possible for deactivation to be triggered only in the
eventthat a good read has occurred (to help prevent sweethearting)?
Both Checkpoint and Sensormatic offer this type of solution,
based on obtaining a good read output signal from our peripheral
port.
Checkpoint manufactures a number of different deactivation
chasses?
Do PSC scanners work with all of these chasses?
No. Magellan SL works only with the Counterpoint III and
subsequent models. The VS1200, VS1000, and HS1250
work with Counterpoint IV, Counterpoint V, and subsequent
models.
Does PSC have factory EAS options for other products, such
as the 950LX and 960LS?
No. However, Checkpoint does sell EAS upgrade kits for these
scanners, as well as for earlier fixed scanners (750F, 750SL,
760SLS, Freedom, Freedom Plus). Contact Checkpoint directly to
obtain these upgrade kits.
EAS Interlock Cable
Overview
This Product Bulletin explains the EAS Direct Interlock cable
and feature. An earlier bulletin for the Magellan scanner, "Checkpoint
Systems' Interlock Feature", details EAS with the microphone assembly.
This means that Checkpoint now has two options for EAS with Interlock.
External Microphone Assembly
In brief, the microphone assembly listens for the Good Read Beep,
ensuring that the label has been scanned (Interlock), which begins
the de-activation process. This upgrade takes approximately 30
minutes.
Direct Interlock Cable
Checkpoint has developed a cable, which will connect to the existing
HHLC Peripheral Port connector (8-pin modular jack) of our scanners,
and plug into their Chassis Main box. The pins used are 3 and
8, the TP_Beep_Out signal, and ground, respectively. When the
scanner emits the beep, the signal goes into the Chassis Main
box (Interlock), which begins the de-activation process. This
upgrade takes approximately 5 minutes. The part number is:
155943.
Checkpoint has tested/approved this cable with the following
scanners:
Magellan, HS1250, VS1200, VS1000
"Y" Cable Adapter
In some applications a customer may want EAS with Interlock AND
a Handheld Scanner. Checkpoint has developed a "Y" cable, which
allows the customer to connect the 8-pin modular jack into a scanner,
with the two connectors available for EAS with Interlock
and a handheld scanner.
IBM Terminals and "Y" cable
One consideration should be made if using the "Y" cable with
IBM terminals: if the customer has disabled the beep on the scanner
via the terminal, interlock will be disabled. In most cases, if
the customer is using an IBM terminal with a TSC and OSC (Table
Scanner and Optical Scanner) driver, they are probably using two
different ports (e.g. Port 17 and Port 9) for scanning, leaving
the HHLC port on our scanner open for EAS Interlock.
