WaveLink® SNC24™

Spectrum24® Network Administration

WaveLink SNC24 allows you to configure and administer your entire Symbol
Spectrum24 network from any Windows NT® or Windows®95 host on the network.
WaveLink SNC24 includes the following components:

Spectrum24 Agent - the key link between a host and any Access Points located on the same network segment. Spectrum24 Agent is a software service that runs in the background of the host.

SNC24 Administrator - a Windows-based application used to configure Access Points and view real-time network activity. SNC24 Administrator connects to both local and remote Spectrum24 Agents for single-point
administration of all locations of your Spectrum24 network.

SNC24 Registry Administrator - allows advanced users to configure specific
features of WaveLink SNC24 from a hosting system's registry.

SNC24 Log Viewer - displays network-generated logs. With SNC24 Log Viewer, you can arrange and filter log entries to accurately review network performance or troubleshoot specific problem areas quickly and easily.

Ideal Solution for Remote Help/Support Desks

SNC24 Administrator displays the entire Spectrum24 network topology from a remote location. All wireless devices are displayed in a tree view which can be expanded or collapsed. The topology, device status, and network activity are all displayed in real time.

You can manage all Spectrum24 network locations with SNC24 Administrator at your headquarters or help/support site and one Spectrum24 Agent per Ethernet segment. Since you can manage all Access Points from the Administrator host regardless of the physical distance, WaveLink SNC24 is ideal for both installations and ongoing network support.

Simplified Installation of Access Points with Auto-Discovery™ and Profiles

With Auto-Discovery, Access Points are essentially transformed into "plug and play" style devices for simple network configuration and management. Once an Access Point is connected to the network, SNC24 Administrator automatically detects it, even if it is unconfigured. You can then set the IP address, net address, and all other configuration information.

Another new, powerful way to configure Access Points is with profiles, which are predefined configuration schemes for Access Points. When you apply a profile to an Access Point, all configuration settings in the profile are automatically assigned to the AP. You can also define a default profile to automatically configure any new AP connected to the network.

Improve Security with Profiles

When you use profiles to configure Access Points, the configuration for an AP can only be changed with WaveLink SNC24. If it is changed from another source (via a direct serial connection or Telnet session, for example), WaveLink SNC24 automatically restores it.

Since the default profile is automatically applied to any Access Point without a profile, you can use the default profile to limit potential security problems with new APs. For example, the default profile could limit the devices that can access a new AP, or the default profile could automatically disable a new AP until it is reviewed and assigned an active profile.

If a security event does occur, such as an unauthorized attempt to modify AP configuration or to access the network, you can specify that alerts be generated. And because different types of alerts can be routed to different people, you can specify that alerts for security events be routed to a security office or designated security personnel.

Troubleshooting the Easy Way

Alerts are displayed when an Access Point is offline or other designated events occur. If the topology tree is collapsed, the alert is displayed for the lowest level shown, and you can drill down to locate the exact source. You can also interface with WaveLink SNC24 so that an e-mail or page is issued for an alert.

SNC24 Administrator includes a Network Activity Viewer which displays real-time network traffic messages, and you can use the SNC24 Log Viewer to display logs maintained by the Spectrum24 Agents. For both the Network Activity Viewer and logs, you can display all messages or filter messages by sender ID, message type, or other fields. Displaying only applicable messages simplifies troubleshooting.

Supports 802.11 and Spring APs, Upgrades Firmware

WaveLink SNC24 supports configuration and management of both 802.11 and Spring Access Points. If you have both types, the topology tree graphically indicates the protocol used by each Access Point.

WaveLink SNC24 even allows you to upgrade the Access Point firmware to convert from one type to the other. With the click of a mouse, you can upgrade Spring Access Points to 802.11 or vice versa.

When combined with an existing WaveLink SNC system for Spectrum One® networks, WaveLink SNC24 can be used for combined administration of both Spectrum24 and Spectrum One networks. WaveLink SNC24 provides a solution for companies that want to maintain both networks or migrate from Spectrum One to Spectrum24.

Feature Benefit
Remote administration Manage all Spectrum24 network locations from a single administration point.
Network tree topology Provides real-time display of entire network in a tree view. Can drill down to an Individual Access Point or collapse the tree to any level.
Remote configuration of Access Points Local personnel connect the AP, and remote administrator does all configuration, including IP address, net ID, or hopping sequence.
Configuration with Auto-Discovery and profiles Auto-Discovery turns APs into "plug and play" devices, automatically detecting unconfigured APs. Profiles assign predefined configuration to APs. The default profile automatically configures new APs
Profile and alert security features APs configured with profles can only be reconfigured from within WaveLink SNC24. The default profile can limit or disable new APs connected to the network. Alerts generated for security events can be routed separately from administrative alerts.
Alerts, configurable event monitor and logs Makes troubleshooting and debugging easy and fast. Alert identifies the individual AP with a problem, and you can then set the real-time Network Activity Viewer and Log Viewer to display messages for that AP only.
802.11 and Spring AP Support Supports Access Points using either 802.11 or Spring protocol. Topology visually indicates which protocol an Access Point uses.
Firmware Upgrade Remotely upgrade Access Points from Spring to 802.11 or vice versa.

System Requirements
For optimum performance, Symbol recommends:

  • Windows NT or Windows 95
  • Pentium® 133 processor (or greater)
  • 32 MB of RAM
  • 10 MB of available disk space
  • VGA or better monitor
  • TCP/IP
  • NDIS 3.1 compatible network adapter (or greater)

(Note: Networks with large numbers of wireless users and multi-backbones may require more system RAM for continued optimum performance. Disk space utilization is as follows: less than 2.5 MB without online help or log files, 1 MB for online help; 2.5 MB per backbone for log files. Intensive logging may consume more disk space).

Specifications are subject to change without notice.
