Is your cell phone within reach while you sleep? A recent article in The Huffington Post informs us that 75% of respondents 18-44 years old are sleeping with their cell phone within reach. I have to admit I am one of the 75% that place my cell phone on the night stand. I have become accustom to the snazzy alarm features built into my phone. My alarm wakes me with a review of my daily calendar, the weather and a sentence or two about a big story in the news. I may think this is an effective and informative method of being awakened. I will let you in on secret, this really annoys my wife. She really doesn’t need to know my daily schedule and the leading story is usually describing some type of news we really don’t want to hear first thing in the morning.
At Compsee we enable anywhere, anytime use of our mobility application. We make it a point to allow our mobility users to engage their mobile app whenever and where ever they are. If this means filling out your daily report while getting ready for bed, we say just get it done.
In the Huffington Post we also learn that Arianna Huffington gave old school alarm clocks to her friends in hopes they leave their cell phones in another room while sleeping. This article reminded me of one of our family rules. No cell phones at the dinner table. A couple years ago, one of my daughters brought a young man over to meet the family. After meeting him we sat down for dinner. He discretely looked down at his phone to read a text. I asked him for his phone. In a bit of confusion he gave it up and then I told him of our family rule, “No phones at the dinner table”. The other part of the rule is Dad keeps the phone until he wants to give it back. Is this me being old fashioned? Yes it is. But we have found this rule encourages lively conversation and often results in a high point of our day.
Look around and notice how ubiquitous cell phones are. Take a moment and ask yourself when is the best time to unplug and take a break from your connected world.
